Dr. Juan C. Zambrano

Dr. Juan C. Zambrano is originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador. He graduated from the Universidad Catolica Santiago de Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1991. During his last year of medical school, he performed clinical rotations at the Jackson Memorial Hospital of the University of Miami, as part of the Latin American Training Program. His internship and residency in Pediatrics were performed at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center from 1994 to 1997. His Allergy and Immunology Fellowship was completed at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA from 1997 to 1999. He became Board Certified in Pediatrics in 1997 and in Allergy & Immunology in 1999.

His interest in the field of Allergy & Immunology started very early in his medical studies. This was influenced by his “highly allergic family.” It was after spending a summer vacation, shadowing his sister’s and dad allergist that he finally felt in love with the specialty. During his clinical rotations at the University of Miami, he had the opportunity to work in the Pediatric Immunology Division with Dr. Gwendolyn Scott. This work, lead to his doctoral thesis about Selenium Deficiency and Cardiomyopathy in children infected with HIV.

During his Allergy & Immunology Fellowship, he worked under the directions of Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills and Dr. Peter Heymann. His research focused on the effect of the rhinovirus infections in asthma.

After practicing in Dover, Delaware for three years, he and his family moved to Houston in 2003. It was a great opportunity to join Southwest Asthma & Allergy Associates at the Memorial City and Copperfield locations. His interests included asthma in its different presentations, both in children and adults, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and urticaria.

His wife, Grace, is a pediatrician in private practice. Together they have two children; Isabella and Juanpablo. Both take on the allergies that run in the family, especially Jp who has had a peanut allergy since early childhood.

Besides the passion for allergy, his interests are diverse, but he loves photography the most. He loves to take every opportunity to capture images of birds, nature, and people.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology and American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology. Member of the Texas Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society; Greater Houston Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Society.

He has been Past President of the Greater Houston Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Society.
